Meet the Patch Pals — friends from around the world, and one little alien

Four neighbors from four corners of the world, the cheerful alien who crash-landed in their community garden, and the teapot ship that brought him.

Rosa

A retired music teacher from Guadalajara, Mexico. Her hands are slower on the guitar strings now, so she teaches with her voice instead — and hums a little fanfare every time somebody wins a game.

Kai

A retired fisherman from Hilo, Hawaii, who can read tomorrow's weather in tonight's clouds. He referees Water Basketball and Ring Toss and cheers for every splash.

Lucia

A gardener and grandmother from a hill town in Italy. Her kitchen smells like basil and fresh bread, and she waits under the tree in Apple Catch with a napkin.

Ravi

A retired mathematics teacher from Jaipur, India. One dream: everything in its place. He fills the shelves in Tidy Shelves and checks every Sudoku row twice.

Comet

The one little alien — the slowest runner on the fastest planet, which makes him the speedy one down here. He coaches Baseball and leads the way through the Spaceship Maze.

The Kettle

The teapot-shaped ship that brought Comet — it forgets things sometimes, and the whole crew helps it remember.

How the friends found each other

It started the night a teapot-shaped spaceship sputtered out of the sky and landed — gently, politely — in the community garden the four neighbors share. Everyone brought what they knew, and by morning they were a crew.

Rosa heard it first — a whistle from the garden, like a kettle left on too long. She was the one who knocked on the little ship's door, and the one who sang so the frightened visitor inside would know he was safe.

Rosa stayed a music teacher her whole life, and she says the garden is her best classroom yet: every game here ends in a song, and every friend sings back.

Rosa's favorite study is the science of sound — how humming makes the air wiggle and how echoes find their way home. She tunes the games' chimes so winning always sounds warm.

Kai looked at the smoke over the garden and knew — the way he once knew storms from his fishing boat in Hilo — that it wasn't smoke at all. It was steam. Something out there needed water, and Kai brought the hose.

Kai misses the sea sometimes, so he built a little weather station by the garden gate. Clouds, rain, sprinklers — there is always something to cheer for.

Kai studies weather — clouds, rain, and the water cycle. He picks the perfect breeze for Ring Toss and always knows when to bring the games indoors.

Lucia came running with a basket, because in her village that is what you do when a stranger arrives: you feed them. Comet's first meal on Earth was minestrone, and he has planted vegetables with her ever since.

Lucia's hillside garden back home froze every winter. Here, she starts seeds indoors on every windowsill, so something is always growing — and always ends up in the soup.

Lucia studies plants — how a seed becomes a sprout becomes an orchard. She grows the snacks in Apple Catch and knows every flower in the pinball garden by name.

Ravi measured the crash site, counted the scattered parts, and drew a diagram before anyone had finished saying hello. By sunrise the little ship was patched, labeled, and better organized than it had ever been.

Ravi's puzzles used to pile up on every table. Now he sorts one shelf a day, saves one puzzle for each friend, and says a tidy shelf and a finished Sudoku feel like the same kind of happy.

Ravi loves math — counting, measuring, and sorting things into patterns. Every game of Sudoku, Solitaire, and Checkers gets his quiet nod of approval.

Comet is the one who fell out of the sky. He dozed off at the controls somewhere past the Moon — his home planet moves so fast that he never once got to finish a nap — and woke up in the kindest garden on Earth.

He stayed because the garden moves at noticing speed. Every slow morning walk becomes an adventure, and four friends always wave him home.

Comet studies the stars — orbits, speed, and star maps. Astronomy taught him his favorite lesson: even the fastest things in the universe take their time going around.

The Kettle

The Kettle wasn't always a spaceship. It was Comet's grandmother's soup kettle, patched with parts and dreams until one day it whistled itself into the sky. It flew Comet across the galaxy and chose the garden to rest in.

The Kettle is an old ship, and old ships forget: it loses parts in the hedges and mixes up its maps. Nobody minds. The friends find the parts, Ravi labels them, and The Kettle remembers being loved.

The Kettle is the crew's engineering classroom — gears, bolts, and how parts fit together. Fixing it is everyone's favorite lesson.

Four corners of the world, one visitor from the stars, six favorite sciences — sound, weather, plants, math, stars, and engineering. Different homes, one team: every game in Bright Patch borrows a little of each.
